Residential Trauma-Informed Care for Adults

Residential trauma-informed care at Wyoming Behavioral Institute is designed to help adults acknowledge their past traumas and teach them effective coping skills. Treatment of trauma is specialized care that focuses on building skills in six key areas. This program is meant to stabilize patients so they can continue their trauma-focused treatment in a less restrictive setting.

This program takes place on a secure and confidential unit in which patients can openly share their traumatic experiences without fear of judgment. Staff members on this unit understand the impact trauma can cause and approach treatment in a way that does not further traumatize adult patients.

Core Components of Trauma-Informed Care

  • Safety: learning ways to keep yourself safe
  • Self-regulation: learning to balance behavior and emotions
  • Self-reflective information processing: learning to analyze your own behavior and actions
  • Traumatic experience integration: learning to accept trauma as part of your life story
  • Relational engagement: learning the importance of healthy interpersonal relationships
  • Positive affect enhancement: learning skills to help mood regulation
